Serving our community, our nation, and our world; by sharing the redemptive and life transforming Good News of our Lord, Jesus Christ.
Christian Home Christian Church is located at the corner of Center Street and N Tunstall Avenue in Apex, NC. Christian Home has deep roots dating back more than 150 years. J. Taylor Stanley writes in his book, A History of Black Congregational Christian Churches of the South; “Although records for the beginning years are almost non-existent, 1865 seems to be the year of that Negro Christian churches first were established. The Civil War ended in the spring of 1865. As early as fall of the same year Black Christian churches were being formed at points in North Carolina and in Virginia. While only two Negro Christian churches date their beginning in 1865 — Broad Creek, of Oriental, North Carolina, and Christian Home, of Apex, North Carolina.”
Through meager beginnings Christian Home began to grow. The founding families who played and continue to play an active role in our Church legacy include the Beckwith, Blount, Bullock, Campbell, Cameron, Clay, Cotten, Davis, Council, Dones, Gaffin, Gainey, Green, Harris, Hinton, Hammond, Hooker, Horton, Hargrove, Jenkin, Johnson, Jones, Lassiter, Lawrence, Lee, Lett, Mangum, McLean, Matthew, Osborne, Petty, Seagraves, Smith, Terry, Toomer, and Utley.
Christian Home has been blessed to have had many outstanding Pastors, men and women, who have stood for that which is right and righteous. We have had the following Pastors: the late Reverend D. A. Hargrove, the late S. W. Albright, the late Reverend J. W. Burwell, 1944-1975; the late Reverend Herman Lee, 1975-1988; the Reverend Harvey Hargrove, 1988- 1989; and the late Reverend Dr. Walter L Gibson, 1989-2009. And Associate Ministers: the late Reverend Mary U. Davis; the late Reverend Evella Beckwith; Reverend Clara Payne; and Reverend Vanessa Nettles.
Under the leadership of Reverend Joseph W. Burwell the congregation became affiliated with the United Church of Christ. In 1992 under the leadership of Reverend Dr. Walter L Gibson Christian Home moved from to two Sundays a month to worshipping every Sunday. The Church motto, Love is Essential, Jesus is Lord was established. In 2005 the church was expanded to include the Fellowship Hall and Pastor Study.
In October 2009 Reverend George M. Greene was elected Pastor with an effective date of November 1,
2009. Under Reverend Dr. Greene’s leadership the church has grown exponentially and now is being
equipped to pivot and emerge as a Pastor and People of God. Dr. Greene’s visionary leadership and
caring spirit has propelled the ministry deep in to the 21 st century. The Christian Home Christian Church
is now looked upon as a House of Prayer on a hill that cannot be hid, helping people to see, seek and to
serve Jesus Christ. Our global outreach efforts extend as far as Ghana Africa. This ministry is literally
reaching out to those that need it most. We are grateful to God for the disciples assigned to the
Christian Home Christian Church. We are proud of the strides and accomplishments our church has
made from 1865 to 2022. May this church continue to stand as she has for the past 157 years, as a living
sanctuary pure and holy tried and true. Philippians 1:6 states, “He who has begun a good work shall
perform it until the day of Christ Jesus.”
